Seeing the Lord Provide on the Streets of San Salvador

This trip has been life changing not only in the experiences that I have witnessed but also in my thinking. A verse that has been demonstrated numerous times during this week is Philippians 4:19. It says βAnd my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.β This verse was best illustrated through the feeding of the homeless the last few days.
Our team has had the opportunity to pass out food to people living on the streets in San Salvador three times this week, twice on the back of a truck and once on the team bus. We had an assembly line system each night where we packaged spaghetti, sandwiches and hot dogs along with cookies, chips and apples. The team also provided chilled drinks along with the meals. As Sus Hijos drives throughout the emptied streets of the city, the volunteers hand out food and drinks and give encouraging words of hope to the people they encounter. These evenings were amazing demonstrations of the the love of the Lord and they also had a lasting impact on the team. We saw so many heartbreaking things. We observed everything from a small child walking the streets in a diaper and bathrobe to an elderly man running towards our truck, literally yelling for food. Each one of these people has a story that we may never know or understand, but we can be assured that the Lord knows their stories. This verse reminds me that no matter our circumstance the Lord will provide. Many of these provision are reliant on His people who are willing to be His hands and His feet and serve others.
This trip has taught me that I have the unique ability to use my gifts to bless and care for others. Feeding the homeless demonstrated to me the gratitude people can have even in the worst of circumstances. Be sure to thank God for every person in your life, the food on your table, the shelter over your head, and every little thing that keeps you living.
